Ned Vare vs. the 7th graders

from the May 8th Guilford Courier, page 6

Adams Crowding is a Pressing Issue

We are writing in response to Ned Vare's letter "Adams Should Look for Efficiency, Not Excuses" (April 17).
Mr. Vare states that "there was no overcrowding. In fact, there was room for an additional 200 students in the existing school." The "Arkansas outhouses" are in fact a necessary addition to keep the class sizes reasonable. Any classroom that is left vacant is only empty for 45 minutes at a time. Would it make sense to make teachers change classrooms every period? They would have to take all of their supplies with them to a new room each time the bell rings.

The music program at Adams is excellent, however when a concert is held all the parents and students have to cram into the gym. There is no auditorium, there isn't even a room with good acoustics. During rehearsals the band often has a shortage of seats and the orchestra has to fit 40-plus students in a room meant for 20. In addition to all this, frequently, springtime mold prevents us from using the basement so that some classes are forced to learn in the halls.

Unlike us, Ned Vare does no attend the school every day. We have seen some of the problems in Adams and know that the school cannot last much longer in its current condition.
