Preparation for town meeting
Hello all,
The town meeting for the budget will take place tomorrow (Tuesday April 7th) starting at 7.30pm at the Community Center.
We found out this morning that the selectman's office is preparing for a possible large turnout by getting the Adams Gym ready if the amount attending the meeting exceeds the fire code for the community center (I believe just over 300). This preparation was undertaken due to several calls questioning the specifics of reducing the budget at town meeting and the amount of people that would be required to do this.
The town meeting will still start at the Community Center, but may recess to Adams in the unlikely situation it becomes to large. As discussed in the email from last night, the town charter states that if 300 voters are present that a vote of 200 of those is sufficient to reduce a line item on the budget (the BOE budget being a single line item). The matter was discussed by the selectman's office with the town attorney today and he confirmed this, also clarifying that if the number exceeds 400, a bare majority would be required
This type of turnout would be unprecedented in recent Guilford history and I am skeptical that there are that many motivated "no" voters. However, we need to be aware that it is possible, and we have been told, both in the paper and during phone banking, of attempts to organize the no voters for the town meeting. The meeting for the turf field was probably the largest in recent history and some felt it circumvented a no vote at referendum -- there is a recent precedent for things of consequence happening at town meeting.
There are two elementary school functions tomorrow night, at Cox and Lakes, so we understand that many parents may not be able to attend the early part of the meeting. However, if a vote is to take place it will take time to get it organized, so we hope that some will consider coming later if a vote is considered. If it does appear that the "no" voters are rallying enough people to cut the budget I will personally be getting on speed dial to call everyone I know to come out. If anyone who can't make the early part would be willing to take a call to come out, please email me your number and I can text you a message or call if necessary.
As I said in the email last night, regardless of the numbers it is important that we have a strong showing of support for education and the budget. While some may question the relevance of the town meeting in this day and age, it IS the chance for the community to come together in person to discuss and decide, and it is important for all voices to be heard.
Please consider coming (or being "on call") to make sure this budget goes to the voters with a strong message. If you are coming please consider speaking, if only briefly. Please feel free to forward this message.
